Wedding cakes with fresh flowers have to be prepared in a method that adheres to sanitation practice so not to contaminate the cake. Read through the step by step tutorials found in Cake Gallery 1.
To create the cake shown in the photo below, you will need the following fresh flowers and hard goods:
Cut your wax paper into small 3" circles and cut a small "x" in the center of each one. Give your orchids a bath in tepid water and let them rest in it for a few hours. Lay out on paper towels and allow to dry. Mist well (front and back) with a flower sealant.
Cut the orchids off the main stem of the Orchid spray. Leave about a 1/2" stem on the back of the orchid. Insert the skewer into the cut stem of each flower. Using a clean roll of tape, start at base of orchid and go down, covering the stem end and the top part of the toothpick. Leave the remainder toothpick bare.
On day of wedding, insert each skewer onto a circle of wax paper and insert into cake. The longer wooden bamboo skewers allow for deeper insertion into cake.
