When the flower stems are not large enough to stick the toothpick into without splitting, simply lay the pick against the flower stem.
Then wrap florist tape down, making sure to stop and leaving bare wood exposed for inserting into the cake.
The finished skewer is ready to insert into the cake. (Remember that hydrangeas have to be put into refrigerator quickly - don't leave them lying out in the warm air for real long.
