Miniature carnations are wonderful for Christmas centerpieces because they are long lasting, come in several shades of red from bright down to deep burgundy and the slender stems slide easily into small spaced containers.
I place my tallest carnation first, right in the center. I'll frame the rest of my spray carnations in using this one as a guide for the length.
The second is a little shorter and leans to the left. Notice that the carnations are a bit longer than the greenery.
Continue to place the carnations, moving down and outward as yu go.
I tend to keep my arrangements in good proportion to the container. If I made this design exceedingly tall or wide, it could easily overwhelm the cute Santa face. Flowers should always complement the container - not look like a huge bush growing out of a very small pot.
It's fine to insert buds and half opened flowers into your design. As long as you keep the foam well watered, the flowers will mature and open naturally.
Like your greenery, work the natural curve of your flowers to advantage when creating the shape of your design.
This Santa is beginning to shape up quickly and is taking on a festive air.
