There are usually several flower heads and buds on each stem of miniature spray carnations. I cut off the long laterals to place those flowers individually where I want them.
I am leaving two blooms at the top of this long stem, however, and will insert it to add lots of height to my overall design.
After placing the stem next to the container to "size it up" with my eye, I cut and then insert the longer spray carnation into the back of the arrangement.
Note how the flower heads are staggering up the design, leading the eye upward.
Now I'm using some of the laterals I cut off the main stem and insert them at angles off the sides of the design.
Angle some of the shorter stems out almost at a 90 degree from the vertical lines of the tallest carnations.
This overview gives you a better look at the way I'm placing these miniature carnations.
Now I insert a long (but shorter than the back stem) down deep into the center of the design.
Turn your design occasionally to the side to keep an eye from all sides on how it's shaping up.
I begin to insert some shorter stems splaying out from the right side of the flower vase.
Always step back and take a critical look to see if your overall piece shows balance and is shaped the way you desire.
